The transport services in Chennai have been
badly hit as the city continues to reel under the
impact of unrelenting showers and several
neighbourhoods and roads have been flooded.
In the wake of the heavy rainfall in the city, the
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has decided
to operate Metro trains with a frequency of 10
minutes till Friday.
According to a report published in the Times of
India (TOI), CMRL will adopt a Sunday timetable
till November 12 due to the heavy rain forecast in the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has
predicted heavy rainfall for Chennai and its
adjoining areas due to a low pressure which may
intensify into a depression.
The Metro trains will run from 5.30AM to 11with
a frequency of 10 minutes.
As per the reports, a monitoring committee has
also been constituted by CMRL to track weather
updates and take appropriate action on the
operation of metro trains accordingly.
CMRL Managing Director, Pradeep Yadav, in a
meeting, ordered the newly-formed committee
to track wind speeds through the anemometers
installed at various locations and take
precautionary measures.
An anemometer is a device that can measure the
wind velocity and pressure to collect real time
data.
Train operations suspended if wind speed exceeds 90kmph
Metro train operations are suspended if the wind
speed exceeds 90kmph for the safety of the
passengers.
The speed of the train is slowed down if the wind
speed exceeds 70kmph.
The committee will not only track the weather
updates but will also ensure that CMRL is well
equipped with motor pumps to drain water if
underground and elevated corridors get flooded.
